As it turns out, studies on the possible link between increased social media usage and it’s effects on mental health rendered some mixed results.
Starting in 2019, Instagram began testing out ‘hidden likes’ in select countries around the world (including here in Canada). Much like the studies, the response was varied. Some users applauded the move feeling liberated from the so-called social ‘comparison game’. Others weren’t in favor, including influencers and those who sought brand engagement through impressive like counts.
So Instagram has taken a balanced approach. You can now choose to toggle ‘like counts’ on or off. Also, you can choose to turn ‘like counts’ off on your posts so others can’t see it- regardless of their account settings.
It appears that a similar feature is available on Facebook as well.
