Helping Kids with Needles

For as long as I can remember I have not been a good needle person! I’m in my 30s and still have to look away when it’s time to get a shot or take blood. But I think my level of not liking needles hit a new high yesterday having to watch my one year old get her shots. We’ve gone through all the other milestone shots without much trouble, but as the nurse pointed out to me as the big tears kept rolling on and on yesterday, a one year old is much more aware of what’s going on and that they just got hurt than a six month old! Thankfully I had the forethought to grab a stuffed animal on our way out of the house to the appointment…something that came in super handy! But I couldn’t help but feel helpless trying to soothe my girl yesterday who was hurt and mad and wanted everyone to know!

So I found some top tips to help prepare for next time, and if you have a little one not too keen on their shots, maybe these will help you too…some might be a little better for bigger kids!

1. Educate Simply: Explain why needles are necessary in simple, age-appropriate terms.

2. Be Honest: Let them know it might pinch, but reassure them it’ll be quick.

3. Teach Calm Techniques: Practice deep breathing to help them stay calm.

4. Distract Them: Bring toys, books, or a gadget to divert their attention.

5. Prepare with Play: Pretend doctor’s visits at home can make the experience familiar and less scary.

6. Reward Bravery: Praise and reward them with stickers or an extra bedtime story.

7. Stay Calm: Your calmness can help them feel safe.

8. Give Choices: Let them choose little things, like which arm to use, to feel more in control.
